February 3, 2004: Hoo-E trouble

Traveling back to the East Coast for a couple of days starting tomorrow, so I knew I had to get out there tonight. Really didn't feel like it, but compromised by deciding to do only pavement so I wouldn't have to wash the bike again after the ride.

Attached lights and rolled out the door about 7:30. Heavy, cold wind blowing out of the north made things difficult, but it kept my glasses from fogging. Decided to head north first so that I could have the wind at my back on the ride home.

More mechanical troubles with the Hoo-E. Having lots of shifting problems with the rear derailler. Adjusted the barrel adjuster about 50 times during the ride, but couldn't get no satisfaction. Has to be either the rear derailler, which is two years old, or the chain, which is also two years old. I know it's not the cogset, because I replaced that in June '03 when I replaced the rear wheel with a Cane Creek Kronos. I'll have to deal with this issue when I get back from New Hampshire.

Basically just piddled around Moss Beach and Montara looking for streets and roads I've not ridden before. Entered McNee on old San Pedro Road and went as far as the horse ranch. Coming home, with the wind at my back, I hit 32.0 mph on the flats of Airport road. That's fucking hummin' on the flats!

Cyclometer wasn't working for part of the ride. Hate it when that happens. Get a lot of motivation from that computer. Saw four deer in an outlying area of Montara. Checked out the Outrigger restaurant where JB and I are going for Valentine's Day.

Another unimpressive technical ride on the Hoo-E. Wiped down bike and lubed chain.
